It is astonishing that for Elizabeth and previous royals, subscriptions from the general public made so much money that they bought diamond tiaras!

They still had clothing coupons at the time. Many women sent their clothing coupons to Elizabeth for her dress but they were supposed to be non-transferrable and they were sent back.

Given the rationing and low availability of nylons in this time frame I’d bet more than one of the ladies that paid to see the gifts wanted the nylons more than the diamond.
