Each week, a new (old) list.

It’s widely known that Hollywood star Tom Hanks has a deep and enduring love for typewriters. He owns dozens, uses them often, and even wrote a book of short stories inspired by them. Pennsylvania Gazette, the ever-industrious and mischievous Benjamin Franklin unveiled The Drinker’s Dictionary—a staggering list of 228 ways to describe being utterly inebriated, reportedly used by the fine, upstanding patrons of America’s taverns. a generation, Jack Kerouac (born on this day in 1922) sat down and distilled his philosophy of writing into a list. It wasn’t a set of rules but a wild, freewheeling guide to living and writing with intensity, honesty, and abandon. He sent it to his friend and publisher Donald Allen, who later printed it in Evergreen Review, a literary magazine at the heart of the Beat movement. Titled Belief and Technique for Modern Prose, it reads like a manifesto, urging writers to surrender to inspiration, embrace imperfection, and write from the depths of their souls.

BELIEF AND TECHNIQUE FOR MODERN PROSE

List of Essentials

Scribbled secret notebooks, and wild typewritten pages, for yr own joy

Submissive to everything, open, listening

Try never get drunk outside yr own house

Be in love with yr life

Something that you feel will find its own form

Be crazy dumbsaint of the mind

Blow as deep as you want to blow

Write what you want bottomless from bottom of the mind

The unspeakable visions of the individual

No time for poetry but exactly what is

Visionary tics shivering in the chest

In tranced fixation dreaming upon object before you

Remove literary, grammatical and syntactical inhibition

Like Proust be an old teahead of time

Telling the true story of the world in interior monolog

The jewel center of interest is the eye within the eye

Write in recollection and amazement for yourself

Work from pithy middle eye out, swimming in language sea

Accept loss forever

Believe in the holy contour of life

Struggle to sketch the flow that already exists intact in mind

Don't think of words when you stop but to see picture better

Keep track of every day the date emblazoned in yr morning

No fear or shame in the dignity of yr experience, language & knowledge

Write for the world to read and see yr exact pictures of it

Bookmovie is the movie in words, the visual American form

In praise of Character in the Bleak inhuman Loneliness

Composing wild, undisciplined, pure, coming in from under, crazier the better

You're a Genius all the time

Writer-Director of Earthly movies Sponsored & Angeled in Heaven

A list of ways to support Lists of Note…

Become a paying subscriber

Donate (via Paypal)

Donate (via Stripe)

Spread the word!

Excerpt from a letter to Donald Allen (1958) from Heaven and Other Poems. Copyright © 1959, 1960, 1977 by the Estate of Jack Kerouac. Boyle, a man now known as the “Father of Modern Chemistry,” sat down to write a wish list—a collection of problems he hoped science would one day solve. Some of his dreams were wildly ambitious: perpetual light, and ships that could not sink. Others were eerily prophetic, predicting advances in medicine, transplantation, and even the development of mind-altering drugs. More than 300 years later, many of Boyle’s imagined breakthroughs have become reality.

The Prolongation of Life.<a class="footnote-anchor" decided to approach the most unlikely of people to assist in the matter: Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Marianne Moore. Moore, who was known by the wife of one Robert Young, an employee in the car manufacturer’s marketing research department, was soon contacted by letter—she agreed to help and over the coming weeks proceeded to supply them with numerous lists of delightful names, all of which are compiled here, ordered chronologically (every word, including those in parentheses, is Moore’s own). and in October 1922, in a final attempt to regain her health, she moved to the Gurdjieff Institute at Fontainebleau, France. Run by the mystic George Gurdjieff, the institute was austere and demanding, and Mansfield—frail, desperately ill, and surrounded by Russian-speaking followers—struggled to adapt. In the back of her notebook, above a journal entry, she compiled a list of words and phrases she needed translated into Russian—a stark and moving record of her most basic needs. Less than three months later, on 9th January 1923, she died at the age of 34.

I am cold
bring paper to light a fire
paper
cinders
wood
matches
mlame
smoke
strong
strength
light a fire
no more fire
because there is no more fire
white paper
black paper
what is the time?
It is late
It is still early
good!
I would like to speak Russian with you.

Source: The Katherine Mansfield Notebooks: Volume 2, published by Lincoln University Press in 1997.

A list of ways to support Lists of Note…

Become a paying subscriber

Donate (via Paypal)

Donate (via Stripe)

Spread the word

Diminish your calves

Precepts for the Guidance of a Daughter

Shaun Usher

Welcome to the 53rd issue of the Lists of Note newsletter. Houghton Library, Harvard University, Cambridge Mass.

Born in Kent in 1722, English poet Christopher Smart is best known, posthumously at least, for Jubilate Agno (‘Rejoice in the Lamb’), a long poem he wrote as a patient at London’s St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics. Consisting of 1200 lines in total, it’s divided into four segments wherein each line begins either with ‘Let…’ or ‘For…’, and the poem is rich with biblical references and expressions of his faith and love for God. However, one particular section stands out, and because it’s essentially an affectionate list of his cat’s best behaviours and attributes, I thought I’d share it here.

For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry.

For he is the servant of the Living God duly and daily serving him.

For at the first glance of the glory of God in the East he worships in his way.

For this is done by wreathing his body seven times round with elegant quickness.

For then he leaps up to catch the musk, which is the blessing of God upon his prayer.

For he rolls upon prank to work it in.

For having done duty and received blessing he begins to consider himself.

For this he performs in ten degrees.

For first he looks upon his forepaws to see if they are clean.

For secondly he kicks up behind to clear away there.

For thirdly he works it upon stretch with the forepaws extended.

For fourthly he sharpens his paws by wood.

For fifthly he washes himself.

For sixthly he rolls upon wash.

For seventhly he fleas himself, that he may not be interrupted upon the beat.

For eighthly he rubs himself against a post.

For ninthly he looks up for his instructions.

For tenthly he goes in quest of food.

For having consider’d God and himself he will consider his neighbour.

For if he meets another cat he will kiss her in kindness.

For when he takes his prey he plays with it to give it a chance.

For one mouse in seven escapes by his dallying.

For when his day’s work is done his business more properly begins.

For he keeps the Lord’s watch in the night against the adversary.

For he counteracts the powers of darkness by his electrical skin and glaring eyes.

For he counteracts the Devil, who is death, by brisking about the life.

For in his morning orisons he loves the sun and the sun loves him.

For he is of the tribe of Tiger.

For the Cherub Cat is a term of the Angel Tiger.

For he has the subtlety and hissing of a serpent, which in goodness he suppresses.

For he will not do destruction, if he is well-fed, neither will he spit without provocation.

For he purrs in thankfulness, when God tells him he’s a good Cat.

For he is an instrument for the children to learn benevolence upon.

For every house is incomplete without him and a blessing is lacking in the spirit.

For the Lord commanded Moses concerning the cats at the departure of the Children of Israel from Egypt.

For every family had one cat at least in the bag.

For the English Cats are the best in Europe.

For he is the cleanest in the use of his forepaws of any quadruped.

For the dexterity of his defence is an instance of the love of God to him exceedingly.

For he is the quickest to his mark of any creature.

For he is tenacious of his point.

For he is a mixture of gravity and waggery.

For he knows that God is his Saviour.

For there is nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest.

For there is nothing brisker than his life when in motion.

For he is of the Lord’s poor and so indeed is he called by benevolence perpetually—Poor Jeoffry! poor Jeoffry! the rat has bit thy throat.

For I bless the name of the Lord Jesus that Jeoffry is better.

For the divine spirit comes about his body to sustain it in complete cat.

For his tongue is exceeding pure so that it has in purity what it wants in music.

For he is docile and can learn certain things.

For he can set up with gravity which is patience upon approbation.

For he can fetch and carry, which is patience in employment.

For he can jump over a stick which is patience upon proof positive.

For he can spraggle upon waggle at the word of command.

For he can jump from an eminence into his master’s bosom.

For he can catch the cork and toss it again.

For he is hated by the hypocrite and miser.

For the former is afraid of detection.

For the latter refuses the charge.

For he camels his back to bear the first notion of business.

For he is good to think on, if a man would express himself neatly.

For he made a great figure in Egypt for his signal services.

For he killed the Ichneumon-rat very pernicious by land.

For his ears are so acute that they sting again.

For from this proceeds the passing quickness of his attention.

For by stroking of him I have found out electricity.

For I perceived God’s light about him both wax and fire.

For the Electrical fire is the spiritual substance, which God sends from heaven to sustain the bodies both of man and beast.

For God has blessed him in the variety of his movements.

For, tho he cannot fly, he is an excellent clamberer.

For his motions upon the face of the earth are more than any other quadruped.

For he can tread to all the measures upon the music.

For he can swim for life.

For he can creep.

Further reading

Read the entire poem here

See the original manuscript here

Read about the poem on Wikipedia here

1

Those who have unsubscribed won’t be reading this, so really I’m thanking all of you.

...Peas maker, Piano puncher, Ponty sucker, Ransacker...

The (Oddest) Occupations of the English People in 1881

Shaun Usher

Welcome to the 51st issue of the Lists of Note newsletter. Upon the realisation that there was no hope for their relationship on a romantic level, Einstein proposed that they remain together for the sake of their two young sons, Hans and Eduard, but only if she agree to the following list of conditions. Mileva accepted them, but to no avail. A few months later she left her husband in Berlin and moved, with their children, to Zurich. They eventually divorced in 1919, having lived apart for five years.

CONDITIONS

A. You will renounce all personal relations with me insofar as they are not completely necessary for social reasons. Specifically, you will forego:

my sitting at home with you;

my going out or traveling with you.

C. You will obey the following points in your relations with me:

you will not expect any intimacy from me, nor will you reproach me in any way;

you will stop talking to me if I request it;

you will leave my bedroom or study immediately without protest if I request it.

D. But his eccentricities weren’t limited to his music. In his 1913 book, Memoirs of an Amnesiac, he listed his “precise daily schedule.” It read as follows.

A MUSICIAN’S DAY

An artist must regulate his life. Here is my precise daily schedule.

I rise at 7:18, am inspired from 10:30 to 11:47.

I lunch at 12:11 and leave the table at 12:14.

A healthy horse-back ride on my property from 1:19 to 2:35.

Another round of inspiration from 3:12 to 4:07.

From 5:00 to 6:47 various occupations (fencing, reflection, immobility, visits, contemplation, dexterity, swimming, etc.).

Dinner is served at 7:16 and finished at 7:20.

Afterward from 8:09 to 9:59 symphonic readings out loud.

I go to bed regularly at 10:37. Once a week I wake up with a start at 3:14 A.M. (Tuesdays.)

I eat only white foods: eggs, sugar, shredded bones, the fat of dead animals, rice, turnips, sausages in camphor, pastry, cheese (the white varieties), cotton salad, and certain kinds of fish (skinned).

I boil my wine and drink it cold mixed with fuchsia juice. I have a good appetite but never talk when eating for fear of strangling.

I breathe carefully (a little at a time) and dance very rarely. When walking I hold my sides and look steadily behind me.

Being of serious demeanor, it is unintentional when I laugh. I always apologize very affably.

I sleep with only one eye closed; I sleep very hard. My bed is round with a hole in it for my head to go through. Every hour a servant takes my temperature and gives me another.

For a long time I have subscribed to a fashion magazine. I wear a white cap, white socks, and a white vest.

My doctor has always told me to smoke. He even explains himself: “Smoke, my friend. Otherwise someone else will smoke in your place.”

33.
